The pigeon is a much-maligned creature. But did you know it can conceptualise, recognise and remember all 26 letters of the English language? And that it’s able to acquire orthographic processing skills, which form part of the ability to read?

Pigeons have unique navigational abilities and have been used around the world throughout history for communications purposes, by government, military and news agencies. In times of war they carried vital messages and some have been decorated for their services in saving human lives.

Pigeons, it turns out, are quite the communicators. And we like that.

Next time you see a pigeon flying past, don’t assume it’s just stretching its wings.
